Leads associates in the manufacturing of all materials / products throughout the manufacturing facility. Coordinates with first shift management, engineering and quality to ensure second shift manufacturing is efficiently producing product per the manufacturing plan. 


  • Receive shift change over information from first shift prior to second shift start.
  • Take ownership of second shift production
    • Be accountable for achieving goals for safety, production, quality, shop discipline
  • Ensure that second shift employees have assignments prior to shift start.
    • Programs
    • Cutting tools
    • Instructions
    • Expectations of completion time.
  • When needed get tools from the crib and set them.
  • Run machine(s) when not completing other duties.
    • Proper inventory transactions must be completed.
  • Provide technical support to shift employees to keep them running efficiently.
    • Contact engineering, programming or management if needed to get support.
    • Make technical decisions (with appropriate input) to maintain production
    • Provide technical notes from shift change over to first.
  • Reassign employee to another machine or project if the one they are on becomes held up.
  • Make sure that the normal shop rules are being followed ie;
    • Break(s) start stop times.
    • Break durations
    • Lunch start stop times and durations
    • Shift start stop times.
  • Ensure dock coverage for off hours receipts or pickups.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Ensure that second shift employees have completed all documentation;
    • Shift log books
    • Preventative maintenance checklist.
    • Inspection documents
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Using the shift changeover document.
  • Ensure each team member meets or exceeds daily production and productivity objectives
  • Initiate any performance improvement or disciplinary actions with second shift employees
  • Assist with coaching/development of high-potential employees
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Perform other duties and specific projects as assigned.


  • Education –
    • HS Diploma / GED or equivalent; one year relevant technical school or equivalent experience preferred
  • Work experience
    • A working understanding of various machine tools and machining techniques.
    • Previous shift lead or supervision.
    • Full understanding of common practices used in machining of complex, precision and sometimes fragile products.
  • Job specific attributes/skills
    • Conceptual skills – ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry
    • Excellent verbal communication
    • Reading – ability to read, analyze and interpret safety, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and common technical information and reports, including the ability to read and understand blue prints
    • Writing – ability to prepare correspondence that conforms to prescribed style and format
    • Reasoning – ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations, utilizing critical thinking skills
    • Computer skills including the machine controls, DNC (Cimco a plus), Microsoft suite, knowledge of typical inventory systems.
