Overview

Sets up and operates centerless grinding machines to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces or metal workpieces to blueprint specifications, following tooling instructions and standard charts, and applying knowledge of grinding procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints and job orders for product specifications, such as dimensions, tolerations, and number of parts to be ground, and tooling instructions, such as grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures and grinding wheels to be used.
  • Grind components to fit / ensure proper operation of assembly.
  • Assemble hydraulic work holding fixtures to drawings. Make necessary modifications to meet design intent.
  • Coordinate with design, Engineering, Quality, and Operations to update drawing as built for custom designed tools. Needed to streamline future manufacturing of the tools/fixtures.
  • Mount grinding wheel and regulating wheel on spindles with wrenches.
  • Dress wheel to specifications using dressing device.
  • Ability to choose the correct grinding wheels, tools for the particular job assigned.
  • Move controls to set specified grinding speeds, feed rates and spacing between wheel faces.
  • Position and secure work to rest at specified heights, using wrenches.
  • Lift and position workpiece manually or with hoist, and secure between wheels and on work rest. Start machine and observe operation.
  • Verify dimensions of ground workpiece for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers and preset gauges.
  • Change worn grinding wheels, using wrenches.
  • May also set up automatic work feeding device, grind non-metal materials, and use SPC techniques.
  • May be required to have experience with custom or production work, or with particular material, product or precision level, or type or model of machine.

 

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma / GED or equivalent; one year of relevant technical school or equivalent experience preferred
  • 2-5 years of shop experience using grinding machines; hydraulic work holding fixtures experience preferred.
  • Conceptual skills – ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide and apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry
  • Excellent verbal communication
  • Reading – ability to read, analyze and interpret safety, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and common technical information and reports, including the ability to read and understand blue prints
  • Writing – ability to prepare correspondence that conforms to prescribed style and format
  • Reasoning – ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations, utilizing critical thinking skills
  • Possession of own tools preferred
